Illegal Music Sharing?

I thought I'd start a topic to discuss views on music sharing and pirating etc, which obviously is a fairly controversial topic and some people may have quite strong views about it.

Personally, I'm not entirely sure. I always make a point of buying music from relatively unknown artist to whom it seems right to give support, and if one listens to and enjoys an album regularly then I think it is right to pay for it. I'm not sure about the ethics of paying money when the actual artist is dead - for example, I've downloaded a fair few gigabytes of Shostakovich, Bach and various Jazz pianists, who are all rather dead - ultimately, it will only generally be going to the lucrative record companies/labels and perhaps the families. Although I always buy Beatles, Beach Boys and Bob Dylan albums as I like them and listen to them so much, and like to up their sales, although that's fairly silly. I also like to have the physical CD, not just a digital mp3, for various reasons such as being able to play them in different CD players etc. and to be able to have a physical object with its sleeve notes etc. Although I did buy the Complete Chopin 17 cd box set, and the Complete Chopin Piano Works played by Vladimir Ashkenazy (13cd) and obviously Chopin is long gone, but it's to do with special interests really.

Obviously, this is the 'digital' age, and although the mp3 may be dying as Chris said, many people do illegally download all their music, and it's the way the world is going - proposed laws and enforcements like Mandelson's are perverse, and people will always be a step ahead with the internet etc.

However, I think the most important thing is to support new artists who benefit from the support, and if you listen to whatever music enough then buy it.

The same debate can be held over things like sequencing programs, applications and Word Processors etc. I admit to using a shared version of Cubase, just because it's so expensive; almost as a statement - if they put the price down to 50 or something then I'm sure may more people would actually buy it, myself included. Also I've never had 400 just to spend like that. Although I did for example spend 100 on a Piano VSTi (True Pianos, it's brilliant).

Anyway, let's hear your views! Debate time!
Forum: Chris Singleton forum

Any thoughts on the Sun's attacks on Gordon Brown's handwriting and spelling this week?

My view is that this was a tasteless, political attack on him and nothing to do with that poor mother's grief.
Relatively unknown but good artists...

Just thought it would be good to have a topic where people could post artists that they think are great but a little known. Obviously people have different tastes, but we've got some similarities on this forum. Whenever I'm talking about music to someone I always tell them about The Raspberries and Chris Singleton. Obviously this is Chris's forum, so I need not recommend listening to him as I'm sure you all already do!

However, The Raspberries can be mentioned - they are an early 70s group, generally considered to be "Power-Pop". Whenever I tell anyone about them I first ask whether they know Eric Carmen, generally they say no, then I say "you know the song 'All By Myself', well Eric Carmen wrote that after he finished the Raspberries." They released 4 albums, the last one "Starting Over", endorsed by John Lennon, featured 2 different members taking the place of the bassist and drummer. Although I very much like all the albums, my favourite is probably the second, "Fresh Raspberries". The first two are lighter, more Beatle-esque, the second two are heavier, more power-pop, perhaps more Who-esque. Being a great Beatles fan I particularly like the first two, and there's some fine 3 part harmony too. Check out "Go All The Way", "Let's Pretend", "Tonight" (not quite the same as Chris's...) and "Overnight Sensation (Hit Record)" to name one from each album in order.

Also listen to "Play On" and "Cry" on Starting Over. Both sung by Scott McCarl, some may on first listen confuse him with John Lennon!
Forum: Chris Singleton forum
